Comics for Kids… No, Really.
December 17th, 2007I’ve always had a soft spot for Comics aimed at kids because I started reading comics at age 6 and I blame them for fostering my budding intelligence and enjoyment of reading.
So, I’m really looking forward to Toon Books it looks like a cross between a Nicktoon and dr. Seuss, of which, I admit, I love both.
But, I remember the first books I read weren’t aimed at kids and I kind of think they may have been part of the appeal. But these are aimed at 4 year olds, so it may be a bit more effective.
What do you guys think of kids comics? Are you a fan of Johnny DC titles or Marvel age? What comics did you read as a kid?

My problem is finding books at my local store that are appropriate for younger kids (say from 3-9). A lot of books, even those targeted at pre-teens, have more violence and adult themes than I’d like. For example, the recent Power Pack/Spider-man miniseries seemed nice and kid friendly … right up until the part where Venom was hiding under one of the kids beds.
Venom? In a kids comic?
Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius is a good if irregular title that has a nice Calvin-and-Hobbes feel to it. Mary Jane Loves Spider-man was designed for tweens, and was easy enough to edit down to a four-year-old’s level of understanding.
But these few examples aside, I don’t see a lot of titles out there that I’d want my kids to read, even at age 10-13. Look at the major events of Identity Crisis, Infinity Crisis and most of the X-Titles, and then … [wonder woman spoiler]

… think about how you’d explain to your kid why Wonder Woman’s snapping some guy’s neck. Or pick up Ultimates 3, and be prepared for a conversation about what a sex tape is, and why Iron Man is featured in one.
So yeah, Toon Books looks very cool, and I’ll definitely pick some up when they come out. This is exactly the sort thing I’ve been looking for.
