Comics Political Leanings?

In the upcoming issue of Spider-man, Barack Obama will be making an appearance. and do the “terrorist fist jab.”

So, of course, this means Joe Quesada gets to make another media appearance or two. Good for Him. Check it out above.

Of course, this seems to be largely predicated on the fact that Barack Obama has said he collects Spider-man comics.

But this favorable Obama appearance led Christian Science Monitor to ask “Do Comic Books Lean Left?

What do you think?
According to Comic Vine, Bush has appeared in a number of Marvel Comics. I haven’t read all of them, but I know the Ultimates appearance was pretty favorable, making him appear competent and in control. Also, his appearance in Avengers Initiative issue 2 or 3 were favorable from what I recall. And here’s a thread from CBR, comparing Bush to Iron Man.

So, is there any validity to either argument? Do comics have a leaning or are people just seeing what they want to? What do you think?

  1. G-Man says:

Bush has appeared in several comics. I don’t really recall him appearing incompetent. It seems the creators (or editors) have usually decided to play it safe and not try to offend anyone.

  2. Traditionally in the major publishers, presidents have universally been shown in a positive or neutral manner.

Though, any claim by Marvel that this isn’t a marketing ploy, is B.S. Magazines, and merchandise is flooding the market with Obama’s face on it, and Marvel’s trying to cash in as well (not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

The Savage Dragon’s out and out endorsement of Obama during the election was more notable to me.
