John’s Pull List for 8/5/09

absolution1a
AVATAR PRESS
Absolution #1 (Of 6), $3.99 Christos Gage this is the first issue after the zero issue. I really don’t understand doing a separate zero issue before the series, at that point the zero is the introduction to the character, unless something justifies its ‘Zero-ness’ it should just be the first issue. Anyways Christos Gage take on a super hero that kills.
Great to see Gage stepping outside marvel, but is anyone dying for more non big 2 super heroes?
Interesting in the way that I’d be interested in Watchmen from Ozymandias’ point of view. So I’m willing to give it a shot, hopefully the socks will be blown off.

DADOES2
BOOM! STUDIOS
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep #2 (Of 24), $3.99 This book I’m really more interested in, at this point, from the technical perspective than diving into the story. The story read will probably come later when I can read slabs of it at a time, although the issues do read as fulfilling slabs unto themselves.
Irredeemable #5, $0.99 This is like the Reese’s Cup of Comic Books. On one side you have a strong introspective look at the breakdown of the world’s great hero. On the other you just have the visceral wrong fun of the world’s greatest hero taking down good guys, bad guys, and civilians with merely a thought. If you haven’t checked it out, also out this week is the Trade Paperback of the first four issues of the series for only $9.99.

buffy27
DARK HORSE
Buffy The Vampire Slayer #27 (Season 8), $2.99 By this point, I’m really reading just to get to the end of the ‘season’ but it’s still a fairly enjoyable book, just nothing rock star and nothing so bad I want to quit reading.

north402
DC COMICS
North 40 #2 (of 6), $2.99 The first issue was really kind of lackluster being the stock origin story issue that we’ve kind of seen before. (Rising Stars) I would’ve liked better if he’d more quickly dived into the story and I’m hoping that’s what we’ll see in this issue.

chew3
IMAGE COMICS
Chew #3, $2.99 When I finished reading the first issue of this, I literally felt nauseous afterwards, and I mean that as the best compliment possible. This is a book that feels like it’s taking too long between issues because it’s just that good. Also out this week are reprints of the first two issues, so pick up all three and don’t read too close to meal time.

InvIronMan16
MARVEL COMICS
Invincible Iron Man #16, $2.99 You don’t think a story of the smartest man in the Marvel Universe (Eat it, Reed Richards) going the way of ‘Flowers for Algernon’ would make for an entertaining read, but it’s really one of the best books Marvel is putting out in my opinion. And I know it’s coming, so I’m even looking forward to how they are going to hit the reset button on this one. That’s what’s going to make or break this arc in the end, but so far it’s one hell of a fun ride.
