Over at Marvel.com they’re giving a preview of the new Iron Man armor. Or you can just see it right here:
Some people are not happy with this new design, saying it looks a bit too much like the Iron Unitard than the Iron Man Armor. I’m not sure how I feel about it to be honest. I could see this easily working with the Extremis Armor that Warren Ellis introduced. In that Tony Stark could adapt his skin into the contact suit that the armor went over. Could this be a sign that the extremis will be back in action once Tony gets his reboot?
Obviously the biggest influence appears to be the movie costume and that’s evident by who they chose to design it, Ryan Meinerding, designer on the “Iron Man” and “Thor” films. They describe the design as sports car like, “If technology is increasingly getting smaller and lighter it seems like the Iron Man should do the same: ergonomic and aerodynamic… I love what we’ve come up with. It feels like the next evolutionary step in the Iron Man’s design.” I personally prefer armor that looks like, you know, armor.
Also of note, I think, is how this armor looks touched by the silver centurion armor.
The silver centurion armor was designed by Tony for Jim Rhodes, when rhodes was wearing the Iron Man armor. But Stark put on the outfit to avenge a fallen friend. The armor was designed with a more militaristic design, and meant to be more of a battle armor. Marvel does say Tony will have a new mission, will this put Tony in even more of an offensive role?
Also, if you’ve been reading Invincible Iron Man, this Armor looks very close to the one worn by Ezekiel Stane in the first six issues of the series.
I wonder if he will be involved in the new armor design or an influence of the design.
But as always, the most important question is what do you think of the design?
Like it? Hate it?

Am I the only one that likes the Ultimate Universe Iron Man armor? Well, with the exception of the helmet, which sucks. I agree, armor that’s packing that much weaponry, as well as flight capability is going to be a bit bulkier. Actually if you look at the Ultimate Iron Man mini-series some of the earlier models that hand perfectly round eye holes in the helmet weren’t bad designs.
I really liked the Ultimate Armor as well. It looked like an armoured flight suit, which I thought was perfect. I liked the earlier suits for what they were supposed to be, prototypes, but would’ve hated if he was using that from issue to issue.
