Hi guys! Just wanted to say I had the Voltron TOY ROBOT that was made from all the little ships, cars, and vehicles! I hated the lions, they sucked! Anyway I am a 37 year old dude who collected comics from about 15 to 22 and then they just got too expensive for me :-P I miss 0.75 cent comics! Ha! But I was hardcore and often wander into shops, watch all the movies, and listen to podcasts ( I actually have 3 or 4 cases of comics in my closet :). Just wanna say I've been listening to you guys since your very early episodes and alway enjoy your witty banter. I also love some of the obscure stuff you guys discuss that goes back to comics and video games from my time. I remember the Odyssey console, colecovision (which is probably spelled wrong), atari or course and I still have a fully functional NES which my wife and I use to practice our Tetris wizardry. Anyway I grew up in broward county and just moved to Tucson Arizona and just want to thank you guys for a little piece of home, which of course is your podcast, cause you guys were in my back yard. Just wanted to say thanks for the laughs and knowledge! Keep'em coming.

This is why I've more confused now. They seem to be trying to grab the younger broader audience, but say they're keeping all of the continuity.
Which seems to pander to both audiences, but really appeals to neither. The bigger problem is that the change wasn't telegraphed, which is has a big WOW factor, but makes it feel like a random change. I always support story over continuity, but this seems like throwing out continuity to pile on more continuity.

I have no idea who Ben McKenzie is. I'll try to find an audio clip for next show. Maybe he can do a decent job. I'm still distraught nobody has contacted me to voice a marvel or DC animated project yet. I have a great Batman voice, I've been told.

I just really got into alot of DC titles and now they just never happened? That makes me as a reader less inclined to care about picking up issues anymore because the history and details and been so built in, especially over the past couple of big events, I just don't really feel like starting all over again. I'm happy and used to all this current stuff. I'm kind of confused as to what the bigger picture here is that DC heads are seeing that I'm not. Its discouraging, I guess building more revenue with a younger broader audience is more important to staying true to what you've done up to this point as a set of writers and artists?

Gents! Sorry to hear about all the troubled days.

Limited internet atm - in The land of Cleve and looking for work. Still listening, still loving.

There is a daddy long legs crawling across my screen.... ... ..

Guess I should deal with that, aye?

Cheers

Hi guys,

Just a quick hello - since listening to you guys I've discovered two really great things - Invincible and Smallville.

Am I in a time warp? Who knows? The two series are 7 and 10 years old respectively and I'm only just finding them out now. This is what you get for reading only 1 Sci fi mag - ***. It's UK based and the only thing they seem to have covered in their 10 years of existence is Buffy and Dr Who. Still, I'm well on my way to making up for lost time. I've watched series 1-8 of Smallville in DVD and going through the Invincible Ultimate volumes. I see what Matt said that the early seasons of Smallville are a little Dawsons Creek but holy frog hopping Batman did it get seriously good! Erica Durance is hot.

All I can say is thanks for broadening my horizons and looking forward to the next show.

Best regards,

Patrick.

Am I in a time warp? Who knows? The two series are 7 and 10 years old respectively and I’m only just finding them out now. This is what you get for reading only 1 Sci fi mag – ***. It’s UK based and the only thing they seem to have covered in their 10 years of existence is Buffy and Dr Who. Still, I’m well on my way to making up for lost time. I’ve watched series 1-8 of Smallville in DVD and going through the Invincible Ultimate volumes. I see what Matt said that the early seasons of Smallville are a little Dawsons Creek but holy frog hopping Batman did it get seriously good! Erica Durance is hot.

All I can say is thanks for broadening my horizons and looking forward to the next show.

Best regards,

Patrick.

What do you mean by epic? Kick ass was by no means epic in scale, nor do I think it intended to be.

I expected a black comedy take on a superhero and largely got that, except for that stupid, smaltzy ending.

Hi guys!

Love the show - listened to all the ones on iTunes back to back. Really fantastic stuff. It's lively and I really feel like I'm in the room listening to you guys (not in a creepy quiet way) and look forward to the new podcasts.

I even got into trouble at my weekend job. Laughing out load is not to be suggested in a large echoing warehouse.

Hopefully, you'll review some of my stuff in the future! (On my DeviantArt page) Fingers and toes crossed. Twice.

Keep up the great stuff,

Patrick.

Yeah, after doing the episode I thought I was a little too forgiving of it.

And I think it really comes down to expectations. SHIELD was a better comic than Cold Space, but I had low expectations for Cold Space and higher expectations for SHIELD. So, SHIELD should've been a 4 story 5 art and 3 on new issue-ness. Coldspace a 3/3/5.

It's hard to approach these books with no prior expectations or partiality, It's been a long while since I've done reviewing on a consistent basis. As my reviewed list gets longer my scores will even out a bit more.

I thought Cold Space was so incredibly awful. Really disappointing.

Iron Man Noir was a lot of fun.

I am really enjoying the shows as you get into the format more. Good stuff. Also, something about the length makes them immediately easy to digest.

No way will she be the only death. At the pace this series is moving I see a lot more bad stuff happening before the end.

Oh and GL was a lot of fun as usual. The 'reveal' at the end was interesting.

So the Big death in X-Men Legacy was..... Ariel???
Really, that's what they were crying about in the Second Coming 0 issue.
I'm a huge X-Men Fan and I barely remember her.

My money is still on either Nightcrawler or Rogue biting the bullet.
I also think it's kinda Ironic that I've been saying one of those two is going to die.
When in this Issue Cyclops teamed them up.

They've already shown up coming covers with Rogue, so I doubt it's going to be her. Most of the money is riding on nightcrawler biting it, but I'm hoping it's cable.

A shame that it's more fun to speculate on the x-books than actually read them.

and the podcast is already up.

My tentative list:

R.E.B.E.L.S. #15, $2.99
Spirit #1, $3.99

Well - I was pleasantly surprised Sunday night, after a day out with friends and catching up on the last three weeks of Pacific (which is amazing), to come home and find not only a NEW FULL episode of CR to download, but DIYE! I had a geekgasm so strong that my leg is still twitching and the dog still won't come out from under the bed.

So much to say - Great episode. Matt still hates Marvel and loves DC. But I listen to you boys for more than an ego stroking of my reading choices and in that vein, it was a fantastic episode.

CR 64 High point for me. The Max I Pad. Comic gold I say.

Weighing in on the IPad comic push pull relationship conversation... I agree full heartedly that a part of the comic collecting hobby is just that... COLLECTING! it's even in the freaking name. I think people that grew up collecting paper will continue to do so, and maybe... maybe the next generation of readers will move away from the paper format. I think the comic stores are safe at least for the next 20 years. And to join in the chant about what Marvel does wrong... screwing the number schemes and nixing titles only to bring them back so you have this total uncongruent numbering scheme in many of the long standing books. Bad for collecting, I say... but I guess that's a small price to pay for the books they put out. (on a side - seriously, they changed the Punisher title to FrankenWTF? WTF?)

As too Johns chin fetish - I totally sympathize. I went on a blind date with a women with no chin once.... normal neck, normal head, no freaking chin... Needless to say I wasn't chasing that tail. Don't underestimate the importance of chins!

As a side note : Uncanny X-men 522... the return of kitty - did anyone else totally love that little side story in the end of that issue? I thought it was a freaking ad for another new series (that Marvel loves to embed in my favorite books) and was pleasantly surprised by the stand alone mini story that tied into the event in the book proper. Two thumbs up.

Side Note 2 : Need a sound of a Iron Lung - Can't help you - but how about a hospital ventilator? http://www.sounddogs.com/results.asp?Type=1&CategoryID=1037&SubcategoryID=42
(My favorite is HOSPITAL,VENTILATOR,RUNNING,1 - but have fun and pick your own!)

Side Note 3: Either of you pick up McFarlanes new title Haunt? If so, what do you think of it. I'm not a huge fan of his stories but he's a hell of an artist and I'm actually enjoying this book. Kind of a Punisher meets Spiderman with a twist of lime.

Okay - back to the episode - All I can say about the contest is - I actually called a few of my geek friends from back in the day and asked if they had a story - and they didn't... nor did I... because the parameters of the contest were a tad narrow - Now had it been - a story about someone freaking out in general or whilst I was working - I have a crap load of stories - some of which I may just share in the near future - but because it was in a comic store setting, having never worked in one - my experience is a tad limited. But I did ask around.

The hot chick rant - I had never heard of her - and did a google search while listening and... she's damn attractive. I'm of the vein that if a woman wants to show off... and has something worth showing... God Bless Her... Can I get you a drink, how about two.

Again - Great episode - you two work very well together to make a humorous and very entertaining show (I normally listen to new episodes at least twice - once for enjoyment and once to remind me of what I want to drone on about on your bloggy blog) Keep up the great work and be nice to Marvel... .. .

Still waiting to hear about Matt's Legacy aversion.

Well – I was pleasantly surprised Sunday night, after a day out with friends and catching up on the last three weeks of Pacific (which is amazing), to come home and find not only a NEW FULL episode of CR to download, but DIYE! I had a geekgasm so strong that my leg is still twitching and the dog still won’t come out from under the bed.

So much to say – Great episode. Matt still hates Marvel and loves DC. But I listen to you boys for more than an ego stroking of my reading choices and in that vein, it was a fantastic episode.

CR 64 High point for me. The Max I Pad. Comic gold I say.

Weighing in on the IPad comic push pull relationship conversation… I agree full heartedly that a part of the comic collecting hobby is just that… COLLECTING! it’s even in the freaking name. I think people that grew up collecting paper will continue to do so, and maybe… maybe the next generation of readers will move away from the paper format. I think the comic stores are safe at least for the next 20 years. And to join in the chant about what Marvel does wrong… screwing the number schemes and nixing titles only to bring them back so you have this total uncongruent numbering scheme in many of the long standing books. Bad for collecting, I say… but I guess that’s a small price to pay for the books they put out. (on a side – seriously, they changed the Punisher title to FrankenWTF? WTF?)

As too Johns chin fetish – I totally sympathize. I went on a blind date with a women with no chin once…. normal neck, normal head, no freaking chin… Needless to say I wasn’t chasing that tail. Don’t underestimate the importance of chins!

As a side note : Uncanny X-men 522… the return of kitty – did anyone else totally love that little side story in the end of that issue? I thought it was a freaking ad for another new series (that Marvel loves to embed in my favorite books) and was pleasantly surprised by the stand alone mini story that tied into the event in the book proper. Two thumbs up.

My Pull List is actually alot longer. I only like to post my favorites for the week.
If I was to post my entire Pull List, I'd be in front of my computer all day.
I will be reading the Siege One-Shots for the week and Doc Savage #1 since I've been enjoying The DC Noir Universe.

And guess what John? I think I'll be having another Double Down for lunch today.
Cristina's sister wants to try one, because she's a fatty like me.

I love Hickman's stuff too, but it can be a bit heady for some people and this just wasn't as strong as a first issue as he had on Nightly News, Transhuman, or Fantastic Four.

I haven't read Pax Romana, but I'll check it out when I get a chance.

Done listening and I like it. I might not agree with your thoughts on SHIELD as I am the biggest Hickman fan I know. But I can see where your coming from. Oh, and lets not forget his best book yet, Pax Rommana, it needs a plug!

I'm surprised you're not picking up Doc Savage #1.

I think we should do a live taste test and discussion of the Double Down on the next podcast.

I wasn't trying to "tell" you. (That sounds really stupid as the present tense of "been told.") I just wanted you to know, I'm sorry if it came across as snarky, I just had hopes for the book and they fell flat.

Well I got told. But I still think most people who bought the comic would have played the game first. The cross media promotional aspect of the title was planned that way after all.

Next episode, I'm going to try writing some stuff out in advance and review 2 books in the podcast, (So both books win, yay.)
I think a month down the line, I'll also follow up and read the second issues of the series to see if they improve, keep consistent or drop off. Sound good?

As far as reviewing something I wasn't interested in, that's not entirely true. I wanted the book to give me interest in the game. I wanted to know about the story of the world, because there's also a pen and paper RPG, that I am really interested in. I went with a 6 because I assumed there was content in there for people that have played the game, and it told an acceptable story, if a bit rushed. But it didn't serve the main purpose of a first issue, it didn't make me want to pick up issue 2, it also didn't serve as being a tie-in because it didn't interest me enough to check out the game. I probably eventually will, but nothing that I saw in the comic said the game was anything more than the other 57 fantasy computer/console RPG games I've played.

Hey dude. Yet again a great idea. Though FYI Dragon Age is on 360, PS3 and PC. I must also question the wisdom of previewing a comic that is so tied into a video game that you have not played and have no interest in playing. It just really shows. Not that I didn't enjoy your rambling over the plot. Bare in mind so much of what you are missing when it comes to the story can be found in the game.

This was typed on the bus on my iPhone while I was listening, so please forgive the typos.

John - I'm thrilled that you are using the CR platform to experiment and I like the notion of #1 reviews.

Now it's time for my humble opinion (please take it as such) : I found the story summary a little too in-depth (and a tad ramble on) Tighten up the summary a bit would be my advice. And perhaps a solid statement at the end to recommend or not picking up the title (although I'm guessing one could make an inference from the review, a bold statement or even a "CR/John Rating Scale" would be helpful.

Further thoughts: I would encourage you not to feel constrained by one title an episode - With a tightened plot summary you could easily fit two into a 15 min episode (if that is the length you a shooting for) and doing multiple issues (especially from different publishers) you are more likely to hit a issue that appeals to your vastly diverse audience (that's right VASTLY DIVERSE! you can quote me on that)

Looking forward to another CR episode which is hopefully in the works!

Cheers

I edit out what is really distracting, but try to leave the shows as whole as possible despite hating how long they run.

Thanks for the comments we'll cover Matt's Xmen legacy aversion next show we record. I've been reading the trades (love working in a library). So we'll try to talk about it.

I would love a female guest on the show. Somebody *ahem* was going to blog on the site about the girl's view of comics, but never wrote anything. She is always welcome to come in for a show, but fair warning, I usually record the show sans pants.

I tried Dead@17 when they were at DDP and it just didn't grab me. I like the concept though.

Runaways, I loved up until the third series, it made me drop it with the plastic surgery/rock music/zombie story.

And big thanks for the comments on the Comics Code Authority episode. I like getting that info out there, but I don't want to be too lecturing or preachy, so I generally avoid it.

Matt's always had the cough, Jon just edits it out (I think).

Runaways is the shit. So's New Mutants.

Also, this podcast needs a female guest one day

Great Show As Usual!

So - first topic - Astonishing X-men: Xenogenesis cover http://i.annihil.us/u/prod/marvel/i/content/74042comic_storystory_full-5742565..jpg I would say not the best cover in the catalog but (especially Emma) but honestly - not the end of the world as far as I'm concerned. Don't miss the X's - Don't mind the overt use of negative space on the cover. Emma is pretty bad....

Thor and the Warriors Four! First off - I'm a power pack fan from 10 years ago - so any title that brings and better yet features these brat packers - I'm all in favour. The cover of issue two with Beta Ray Bill running for his life... Classic! http://i.annihil.us/u/prod/marvel/i/content/71420comic_storystory_full-5823244..jpg

I'm definitely enjoying Marvels look to the past with Titles like Marvels Project and Torch. Another I'm looking to get my grubby paws on is The Twelve: Spearhead one shot. If I can find it - I'll let ya know what I think.

I've been wondering what Matt's aversion to X-men Legacy is. I'm also a Mutie lover and have been enjoying the Legacy title. Wondered if there was a root to his radical.

I've recently picked up Runaways at Mur Lafferty's suggestion (See CR 009 http://comicsradar.com/archives/24/comics-radar-009-w-guest-segment-by-mur-lafferty-of-geek-fu-action-grip/ ) and am presently undecided on the series. It has potential.

At Johns suggestion picked up Chew (Image comics) Wow - very much enjoying this title. Was lucky enough to get all but #1 off the rack at my local comics store. Also enjoying Haunt (Image), though I can't help to think he's kind of a spoogy spider-man - but the story is very enjoyable and the art is excellent.

I also wanted to give a little feed back about another episode of CR that I very much enjoyed. John was solo, no doubt due to Matt being sick (I'm worrying about you Matt - you live in Florida and you've had a four month cough!) and John did an episode on the history of the Comics Code Authority and it's relevance to the Banned Book Week. Very Good, Short (Less than 20 mins) Highly recommend a listen too. (Even you Matt!) http://comicsradar.com/archives/620/comics-radar-057-not-approved-by-the-comics-code-authority/

Books I'm looking forward too: The X-men Second Coming Arch - Dead@17 Witch Queen - Enjoying the current Captain America arch - Giving Fantastic Four a whirl starting about 570 - but so far - the juries out. New Mutants have probably been my favorite title as of late. Oh, almost forgot Stephen Kings The Stand - If you are a fan of the books or TV Mini series - excellent comic for you.

Thanks for the show boys! Keep it up and Matt, get well soon!

In other comic news:

I don't know if you caught all the hullablub over Capt America 602 - but I think it warrants a least a nod. Issue is impossible to find for under 20 bucks. I imagine Sarah Palin bought them all up and keeps them in her Vault as proof of the "Liberal Biased Media". On the upside - if she ever gets another gottcha question from Katie Couric about what magazines she reads she can respond "Captain America ... er... 602 and ... eh ... yeah Captain American 602"

You guys are late! ~sniff~ I'm under 20 ft of snow and have not much to do but complain. Just picked up your podcast last week and have been pawing through your archive. I like it! Would love to hear more about your store. Are you on-line?

Another suggestion - you solicit comment via email - but there are no links on the website to do so - maybe some direct links for email comment?

Love the show - look forward to #63

I think I'm going to try using Powerpoint for the next one, sans stupid effects though, but I like being able to scroll around the page which was my goal when I first thought of doing this.

You're absolutely right I belaboured the Disney Comparison and I regret that a bit now, but it was the only major issue I had with the book, so it really "stuck in my craw" to use a southernism.

Not bad for a first shot mate.

I would consider another way of bringing the images up, such as a slide-show, rather than scrolling through a PDF. It would feel snappier and be easier to control. Also, loose the pointer on the screen...

Oh and you seemed to labour the Disney comparison point, so the overall feel was that the show could have been about half the length.

Still, I did enjoy it, and it's always good to try something new. Stick with it!

I really liked the Ultimate Armor as well. It looked like an armoured flight suit, which I thought was perfect. I liked the earlier suits for what they were supposed to be, prototypes, but would've hated if he was using that from issue to issue.

Am I the only one that likes the Ultimate Universe Iron Man armor? Well, with the exception of the helmet, which sucks. I agree, armor that's packing that much weaponry, as well as flight capability is going to be a bit bulkier. Actually if you look at the Ultimate Iron Man mini-series some of the earlier models that hand perfectly round eye holes in the helmet weren't bad designs.

So guys,
Should I tell him about Spider-man 4?
No, I think I'll wait until the podcast. It's going to break his heart.

I wasn't a great fan of the plot, but I like the story.

The second 3 issues of the arc were much better than the first 3. The first 3 was really the standard 'who is the mysterious baddy' but once we find that out, that drives the second issue.

But how can you not love that layout, and I love the captions about reasons to be a hero. It shows such a strong tonal difference between her and batman it really makes me intrigued in the character even more because if you think about, according to the caption, Batman's already lost his war. So have Dick, Tim, and Huntress.
