Wednesday cometh once again, and it is time to pinch our pennies on Wednesday so we can drink them away on friday. Although really this time of year, it’s saving money for presents. But really what better present is there than comics and beer?
Also, this is a very interesting week in that it is the new DCU’s first fifth week and since they are extremely set on having a book that comes out the first week of the month come out the first week of the month, there are no books set in the new DCU this week. So please don’t think I’m a DC hater because I don’t include any DC titles.
The $10 budget:
Many of my favorite comics seem to get cancelled. Herc #10 ($3.99) is no exception. We finally get a story arc that isn’t tied into the latest Marvel event (Fear Itself, then Spider-Island) and the series is cancelled. Well pick it up to see Herc deal with drunk powerless and fight, possibly team-up with Marvel’s other great greek hero, Elektra. Also it’s a 40 page book, so hopefully it gets a solid resolution to the series. We get another 40 page wrap-up issue with Angel & Faith #4 ($2.99) which resolves some threads Angel left hanging at the end of the season 9 comic and will it resolve Angel’s goal of resurrecting Giles? The third book in our $10 selection is Skullkickers #12 ($2.99). This issue is another of the anthology “Tavern Tales” that collects different creators doing fun little vignettes of “Shorty” and “Baldy.” The next storyline kicks off next issue.
The $20 budget:
This week seems to be a week of storyline wrap ups as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 ($3.99) also concludes their first story line and gives us the new origin of the turtles and their new archvillain, Old Hob. And I’ll max out my budget with Ultimate Comics Ultimates #4 ($3.99). The new Ultimate universe seems like a much more dangerous place than just an updated retread of old Marvel U stories and that lets this story seem much more interesting when they’re facing an actual threat. granted give it a year of these guys facing down death and it won’t be as grabbing, but right now it is great.
That wraps up this weeks Comics or Beer Rundown. What’s the top of your comic pull list this week? And, please, what do you think of this column? Do you want to see it continue or am I wasting bandwidth? Would you rather see this or Number One Weekly return?
Column concept stolen from Robot 6′s Food or Comics, but with slightly better priorities. Expected releases come from ComicList.
