Comics Radar 090 – Animality NOT Beastality

Play

We had a better title for this episode, but I feel a certain social responsibility to use this space to tell you that the special type of combat finisher introduced in Mortal Kombat 3 was the Animality. Not Beastality.
DO NOT GOOGLE THE LATTER PHRASE.
On behalf of Comics Radar and the Comics Radar Podcast, I apologize and there will be no mercy on Matt’s soul.

Moving on:
We talk about:

  1. Before Watchmen Prequels
  2. Irredeemable and Incorruptible soon coming to an end.
  3. New Spider-man costume for the End of Earth!
  4. New Ninja Turtle toys, now with extra toes.
  5. DC Sweeps January Top 10. Really? Aquaman?
And as always we jump into the February Previews and comment on everything in the most stream of thought manner possible.

One Moment: Angel & Faith #5

This is definitely a fanboy thing for me. I just don’t dig Matt Smith as the doctor as much as I did Tennant. A little cameo like this is wonderful because anything that gives more Tennant to the world is a good thing. And as anyone who listens to the podcast know, I love geeky double entendre.

- Green Arrow TV pilot.
- AMC expands Walking Dead by 3 episodes.
- Avengers VS X-Men line-up.

January 2012 Previews. I would love to see if anyone actually cut out Mike Richardson’s head and took photos with it.

And Always we want to know what you are pulling this month.

Best Power Rangers Ever

So, for some reason, my internet browsing led me to Power Rangers, which led me to this:
Please let me know when this starts showing up on Saturday morning TV. I think it’s a DVR must. Definitely different from what I remember watching.

One Moment: Wolverine and the X-Men #3

I’ll admit I’ve been feeling less and less enamored with comics in general as time has gone by. One moment is taking the opportunity to look at that one page or panel or scene that reminds me why we love comics. I mentioned this one on Comics Radar Issue 88.

I wasn’t really a fan of Quentin Quire in Grant Morrison’s X-men. He seemed to be a poor mix of the maniacal aspects of Magneto and the super clique that exists in mass media interpretation of high school. He was a dick for the sake of being a dick with very little depth.
Then he appeared in a few other things, that I hadn’t read where he apparently cast off his physical form, brought back the phoenix to resurrect his crush who hated him and then tried to destroy the X-men’s mutant haven, Utopia.
Wolverine and the X-Men brings him back, but grounds him a bit more. Now he’s surrounded by others who are just as, or maybe more powerful than him. So he’s trying to reestablish himself as the bad ass, while trying to fit in with this new peer group.
This panel kind of exemplifies that new status quo, while at the same time showing the simple fun aspect of this X-book that I think has been missing from the X-universe.

If you have a moment that you just loved, or that reminded you why comics are awesome, feel free to email it to me at: john@comicsradar.com. New comics or classic moments, both are loved.

Comics or Beer 04

Wednesday cometh once again, and it is time to pinch our pennies on Wednesday so we can drink them away on friday. Although really this time of year, it’s saving money for presents. But really what better present is there than comics and beer?

Also, this is a very interesting week in that it is the new DCU’s first fifth week and since they are extremely set on having a book that comes out the first week of the month come out the first week of the month, there are no books set in the new DCU this week. So please don’t think I’m a DC hater because I don’t include any DC titles.

The $10 budget:
Many of my favorite comics seem to get cancelled. Herc #10 ($3.99) is no exception. We finally get a story arc that isn’t tied into the latest Marvel event (Fear Itself, then Spider-Island) and the series is cancelled. Well pick it up to see Herc deal with drunk powerless and fight, possibly team-up with Marvel’s other great greek hero, Elektra. Also it’s a 40 page book, so hopefully it gets a solid resolution to the series. We get another 40 page wrap-up issue with Angel & Faith #4 ($2.99) which resolves some threads Angel left hanging at the end of the season 9 comic and will it resolve Angel’s goal of resurrecting Giles? The third book in our $10 selection is Skullkickers #12 ($2.99). This issue is another of the anthology “Tavern Tales” that collects different creators doing fun little vignettes of “Shorty” and “Baldy.” The next storyline kicks off next issue.

The $20 budget:
This week seems to be a week of storyline wrap ups as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 ($3.99) also concludes their first story line and gives us the new origin of the turtles and their new archvillain, Old Hob. And I’ll max out my budget with Ultimate Comics Ultimates #4 ($3.99). The new Ultimate universe seems like a much more dangerous place than just an updated retread of old Marvel U stories and that lets this story seem much more interesting when they’re facing an actual threat. granted give it a year of these guys facing down death and it won’t be as grabbing, but right now it is great.

That wraps up this weeks Comics or Beer Rundown. What’s the top of your comic pull list this week? And, please, what do you think of this column? Do you want to see it continue or am I wasting bandwidth? Would you rather see this or Number One Weekly return?

Column concept stolen from Robot 6′s Food or Comics, but with slightly better priorities. Expected releases come from ComicList.

Geek4x4: Must Have Batman Shirt on Woot Today.

If you’ve never heard of woot. It’s a website that sells only one item a day. One of their spin off sites is shirt.woot. The designs that get made into shirts are decided on by a voting system.

Here is today’s shirt:When the lights are out, the accent lines on “The Dark Knight” glow.

I love shirts where some people just don’t get the joke, it makes for a great geek litmus test.

Anyways shirt.woot has this shirt today for $10. I think they keep shirts for a while but raise the price to $15, until some nebulous point in the future when they no longer sell it, but I don’t really know how all that works, so buy it today.

Woot is not an affiliate or sponsor of the website or show in any way. I just really like their t-shirts.

Live Action Lizard

I’ll admit I’ve been relatively in the dark about the new Amazing Spider-man movie. But apparently a Russian website and a pez dispenser are giving us our first glimpses of what Rhys Ifans as the film’s main villain, the Lizard will look like:

This is just concept art so it could be different from what ultimately appears on screen. I think it’s decent enough. Maybe slightly too human in the face. What do you think of the (probably mostly CGI) costume? Since both characters are in skin tight costumes, who do you think will show more package?
